A restaurant for ramblers in the Alps, at the foot of the Nordkette mountain chain high above Innsbruck, surrounded by steep slopes and soaring spruces – and entirely shaped by wood, inside and out.
The “Umbrüggler Alm” is located at 1,123 metres above sea level. It can be reached in 40 minutes by climbing a forest trail from Hungerburg, a district of Innsbruck that is perched high above the city and, in turn, served by the Hungerburgbahn, which was designed by Zaha Hadid.
The climb is well worth the effort. The organic form of a horizontal building that is clad in larch shingles and lowered gently into the terrain comes into view – it contains an apartment for staff, a kitchen and, naturally, a restaurant, whose atmosphere is heavily influenced by silver fir. Inside, the wooden panelling is interrupted by generous strip windows that offer an almost 180° view across the city towards the Bergisel ski jump. If the weather is playing its part, this view can also be enjoyed from the terrace, which is protected by the projecting roof. Behind this: a wooden facade that is not exposed to the weather and whose colours contrast with the shingle wall that wraps around the rest of the building and is slowly turning grey.
