Children’s Art Laboratory

Cries of astonishment, shrieks of delight, children’s voices – that’s what you find in the KinderKunstLabor (Children’s Art Laboratory). A hybrid timber building that is dedicated to the cultural and artistic encouragement of future generations.

When we think of a laboratory, we probably think of calm and sterility. But things are quite the opposite in the KinderKunstLabor, a museum that presents art in a way that is far from inaccessible. The focus is on active experiences and hands-on design and the atmosphere is shaped by kids’ voices, cheers, laughter and even the odd grumble.

The hybrid timber building is radically conceived from a child’s perspective. Used as a constructional element in the ceilings, cladding and floors, wood offers an atmospheric contrast to the visible concrete structure that takes the form of a central, treelike column. An outer layer of timber slats mediates between the inside and outside, continuously reshaping the space with a play of light and shadow that changes throughout the day. A post-and-rail facade in the areas with full height glazing creates additional moments of openness to the surroundings. Striking views into and through the building and the skilful positioning of the spaces make the laboratory visually accessible even to the youngest visitor.
